The fake-certificate problem in Indian training institutes — and the QR fix
Fake certificates hurt the issuing institute most: every counterfeit carrying your name spends your credibility with employers, until "certificate from a local institute" means nothing in your town. The fix is structural, not forensic — certificates that resolve via QR to a public verification page make every fake detectable in ten seconds, and every genuine certificate provable for years.
A computer-training institute discovers the problem the same way every time: an employer calls about a "graduate" the institute has never enrolled, holding a certificate with the institute's name, a near-perfect logo and a confident signature. The employer is annoyed. The institute is embarrassed. And the genuine student who applied alongside the faker just lost the benefit of the doubt.
How the counterfeit economy works
- The template copy: one genuine certificate + basic photo editing = unlimited fakes. Paper security (embossing, holograms) raises the effort slightly and stops nobody determined.
- The ghost-issuer: cyber-café operations selling "certificates" from institutes real and invented — your name is being sold whether you know it or not.
- The inside job: in loosely run institutes, certificates issued off the record for a favour or a fee. No forgery needed when the pad is unattended — which is why issuance discipline (below) matters as much as verification.
Who pays, in order
- Your genuine students — employers who have been burned discount every certificate with your name, including the real ones. The counterfeit taxes the honest.
- Your brand — years of results, undone by photocopies. Reputation is your only moat against the institute opening across the road; fakes drain the moat.
- The employer ecosystem — once local employers stop believing local certificates, they stop shortlisting on them, and job-oriented training loses its point in your market.
Why detection-by-suspicion fails
The traditional check — employer calls the institute, someone searches a register — fails at every step: the call costs the employer effort (so mostly is not made), the register search takes days, and the institute only learns about fakes that happen to trigger a call. The fix must be zero-effort for the verifier and automatic for the institute.
The QR fix, mechanically
- Every certificate is issued from the institute's exam records and carries a QR + certificate ID at printing.
- Scanning resolves to a public verification page: student name, course, result, issue date — exactly what the certificate states, nothing more.
- A fake now fails in one of two visible ways: no working QR (instantly suspicious once your town knows your certificates verify), or a QR pointing at a page that contradicts the paper.
- Verification requires no login and no call — an employer checks in the parking lot in ten seconds.
Issuance discipline completes it
Verification exposes fakes; discipline prevents ghosts. Certificates should only be issuable against a student record with results — never typed free-form — and every issuance should log who issued it. Common questions
Document it (photo, where it surfaced), inform the employer in writing that it was not issued by you, and keep a record of the incident. If a pattern emerges, a police complaint establishes a paper trail. Then close the door: adopt public verification so the next fake dies in ten seconds instead of a phone call.
Only if you backfill them into records — worth doing for recent batches at least. Otherwise, state the cutover honestly: certificates from [date] onward carry QR verification; older ones verify by written request. Honest versioning protects you better than pretending coverage you don’t have.
